Our Research & Development team and facilities are co-located with Manufacturing and Supply Chain in Blackfoot, Idaho, the gateway to the Teton mountains and Yellowstone National Park.  As a team, we are leaders in the industry, with a long history of innovation and a continuing commitment to invest in our food development and our people development.  Our corporate headquarters in Walnut Creek, California is home to Marketing and Sales, whom we partner with every day to make our foods come to life. 

What We Need

Basic American Foods' Research and Development team needs a proven food innovator and people leader that can take an idea, turn it into food, and execute the food through commercial scale-up. To do this, we're looking for a Sr R&D Manager with;

  1. Sound R&D fundamentals. You know how to develop new foods and you can partner with Marketing to identify new product platforms, driving short, medium and long-term growth projects to completion.
  2. A 'roll up my sleeves and get the work done' mindset. We're a small team. This role interacts with our CEO and senior leadership, and at the same time is personally working on the details of the food formulation and execution plan.
  3. Experience in Foodservice and Consumer development models. We have a diverse portfolio of brands and foods, each with unique needs.  This role will manage a portfolio of projects, directly and through your team, that touches all of our business units.
  4. A passion for bringing new foods to life. You know how to translate operator and consumer insights into foods that delight.  You enjoy the challenge of creating new food, finding new ways to make the classics, and continuously improving the quality of our existing products. You understand that curiosity, creative thinking, and a healthy dose of analytical skills wins.
  1. A thought leader. You provide R&D thought leadership for all projects through planning and project execution/oversight.  You continuously challenge "the way we do things" and find new and better ways.

What You'll Do

  1. Lead a Research & Development team across multiple brands and product platforms. You will have accountability for projects from cradle to grave. We'll give you the resources to be successful and you will provide direction and establish team priorities aligned with the BAF strategic goals
  2. Execute projects with marketing and innovation. Unlike at bigger companies, leadership roles here are a blend of thinking and doing. We find that it leads to better business outcomes and individual development.  You will manage projects, communicate progress and challenges, and act as a technical expert. 
  3. Continuously improve our new product development process by actively participating in and encouraging improvement initiatives that improve our win rate
  4. Partner closely with other functions. You'll work directly with Marketing and will lead cross-functional areas including Finance, Operations, Quality, and Regulatory, Procurement, Design Engineering, and External Partners throughout the new product development process

What You'll Bring

  • 10+ years of research & development experience preferred, across both foodservice and consumer brands
  • Ability to quickly change gears, managing projects across multiple brands and business units, anticipating needs, innovating, multi-tasking and excelling in a fast-paced environment
  • Encourage risk-taking and innovation, while at the same time balances the need for the business to make good long-term decisions. Comfortable with ambiguity and influencing others to a higher comfort level
  • Solid R&D fundamentals mixed with business acumen: formulation, sensory, food processing, culinary, and financial acumen all to deliver better business decisions
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with an eye towards documenting and managing our intellectual property
  • A presence and energy that inspires belief in cross-functional partners in the face of challenges 
  • A drive for results you can proactively solve problems and have a proven track record of executing complex projects quickly and successfully
  • A continuous improvement mindset, recognizing there is always room for improvement and you can effectively lead teams in identifying and collaboratively solving problems
  • A learning mindset and deep curiosity about food, consumers and customers, with sound experience in both traditional and contemporary research methods
  • Bachelor's degree required, master's preferred
